Reducing the Cost of Your Wedding

Saving tips that can cut wedding costs in half

According to USA Today, for a typical 200 guest American wedding the average cost is $19,000 and this does not include the $3,500 average cost for a honeymoon. The last thing a new couple needs is an expense like this when they are getting started. Fortunately, there are several ways to cut these costs.

1. DIY

Since you will be posing for photographs, dancing with all your relatives and taking part in the festivities, you will not be able to tend bar or anything but there are some things you can do yourself and save on the cost. You can design and print your own invitations on your computer these days or make the flower arrangements. You could also bake the cake or create your own decorations. Community colleges and craft stores have classes specifically for this purpose. Use your creativity and do what you are best at.

2. Ask Your Friends to Help

Many of your friends and relatives will be happy to get involved with things and it will form long-standing bonds. If you have a friend that is good at picking music, ask the person to DJ the wedding. That will save significant costs as will bartending, baking, cooking or anything else they are particularly good at.

3. Do Not Buy Things Labeled “Wedding”

If you buy things that are marked wedding such as wedding shoes or wedding disposable camera, you will be paying up to 25 percent more for the item. Whenever possible buy the equivalent "non-wedding” item.

4. Wedding Dress

You could pay from $2000 to $4000 for a dress you will most likely be wearing once. This is an unnecessary expense. Ask your friends or relatives if you can wear one of their old wedding dresses. They will most likely be flattered by the request and you may just start a tradition. Alternately, you can buy a beautiful white formal dress that is not labeled “Wedding Dress” for much less.

5. Size Matters

Keep your costs in mind when sending out wedding invitations. The more people you invite the more it will cost you. There is no need to invite every person you have ever known in your life or everyone you work with. It will cost you about $80 per each person you invite on average.

These are just a few of the cost saving methods but it gives you a general idea of how to go about it. Some things are more important than others are for different people. You can cut the expenses in unimportant areas, so you can spend more on the things that make you happy.
