Astroclosets Awarded “Star Product 2013" By Astronomy Magazine

New site launch features an innovative and economical way to house medium to large telescopes securely.

PORTLAND, OREGON, October 30, 2013, Astronomy Magazine has announced this years winners of their prestigious Star Product designation. They examine and review all the latest and greatest astronomical products and select 35 of the best in the world. Astroclosets was recognized for the innovative design and economical value of its new product, the "Astrocloset". Greg Mihalik, an amateur astronomer and builder is its creator, and describes it as an economical observational platform to house medium to large amateur telescopes, and fun to build.

The "Astrocloset" is a secure and vented aluminum building on casters that locks in place over a telescope when not in use.  When unlocked, it rolls off the scope to the other end of its rail. There, it can also be anchored and used as either a warming or imaging station with available shelves and fold away desk. Within minutes, the scope is ready to use. The "Astrocloset" is available with a choice of three cooling systems depending on local weather conditions. It has built-in passive convection cooling, with screened vents, top and bottom. There is easy to install insulation available for the whole building. Also available are the Eco-friendly garden boxes, the greenest way to cool the "Astrocloset". By training plants to grow up and over the building, it creates a moving bush to always keep it in the shade.

The "Astrocloset" is shipped in an easy to assemble kit. No special mechanical training is required for a trouble-free, speedy assembly. Constructed with high grade aluminum panels and stainless steel fasteners, the "Astrocloset" was designed to require extremely low maintenance.  The building can be mounted on either a wooden deck or concrete platform. The standard size is 4'x4½ 'x8' tall.  A 5'x5'x8' tall model will soon be available, as well as 10' tall editions of each size.  Custom sizes can be obtained by special order. Fabricated in the USA with 95% American materials.

Greg Mihalik needed to find a solution that was economically feasible, and would enable him to have his scope ready to use at a moments notice, which meant: built, collimated, and cooled to ambient temperature. Not finding such a product, he designed and built one for himself. The costs of large amateur telescopes have dramatically decreased in recent years, but not that of observatories.  It became apparent that with a few refinements, the"Astrocloset" could fill the needs of a great many enthusiasts. This led to the formation of Astroclosets. A company goal is to establish a "Scopes to Schools" program to donate telescopes to disadvantaged schools.
